what is IM？
IM is a client side software, it can integrate all client side software
IM can transfer files much faster than mail, it can used as software update agent
IM can communicate in P2P way, it can used in collaboration work
IM is a mini portal
IM can be used in DRM multimedia service
XMPP 协议的几个扩展很有意思，
JEP-0030 -- Service Discovery -- a robust protocol for determining the features supported by other entities on an XMPP network.
JEP-0004 -- Data Forms -- a flexible protocol for forms-handling via XMPP, mainly used in workflow applications and for dynamic configuration. (XForm?)
JEP-0096 -- File Transfer -- a protocol for transferring files from one XMPP entity to another. (FTP?)
JEP-0071 -- XHTML-IM -- a W3C-reviewed protocol for exchanging XHTML-formatted messages between XMPP entities. (XHTML?)
JEP-0060 -- Publish-Subscribe -- a generalized framework for publish-subscribe functionality, mainly used to deploy content syndication, extended presence, and event notification services. (RSS?)
IM是英文Instant Message的缩写，也就是即时讯息（即时通信、即时通讯）软件。我们常用的QQ，MSN，Yahoo Messenger，网易泡泡等都属于IM软件。它们能让你迅速地在网上找到你的朋友或工作伙伴，可以实时交谈和互传信息。而且，现在不少IM软件还集成了数据交换、语音聊天、网络会议、电子邮件的功能。
目前中国境内使用最多的IM软件是深圳腾讯公司开发的QQ软件，随着MSN的发展，公务用MSN较多。
